Isolated Mogadishu Appeals to Serbia for Arms Following Turkish Rejection

I am receiving credible reports that Mogadishu’s regime is now desperately appealing to Serbia for the acquisition of advanced weaponry, after Turkey declined to supply them with arms. Ankara’s refusal reportedly stems from deep concerns over the blatant and reckless weaponization of the state’s security apparatus along clan lines, which has already destabilized fragile balances in the capital and beyond.

In contrast, Serbia appears to be signaling a greater willingness to meet Mogadishu’s demands. This shift is closely tied to last year’s secretive and controversial uranium deal struck between President Hassan’s government and Belgrade, a deal that was widely criticized for lacking transparency and raising serious international security concerns.

Analysts believe the regime’s overtures to Serbia highlight not only its growing isolation from traditional partners such as Turkey, but also its increasing reliance on opaque arrangements that could further entrench internal divisions and undermine regional stability. Should the weapons transfer proceed, it risks emboldening the already militarized clan structures in Mogadishu, potentially escalating conflict rather than fostering security.

The situation underscores how external actors, driven by their own economic and political interests, may choose to overlook the dangerous implications of enabling a regime whose policies are seen as exacerbating Somalia’s fragile political fabric.
