Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs on Canada Over Potential China Deal

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that he would impose 100% tariffs on Canadian goods if Canada moves forward with a trade or economic agreement with China, escalating rhetoric around global trade and U.S. economic interests.
In remarks that quickly drew international attention, Trump framed the potential tariffs as a defensive measure to protect American industries and national security. He argued that any deal between Canada and China could undermine U.S. economic strength and give Beijing greater influence in North America.
“Canada cannot benefit from the U.S. market while simultaneously making deals that empower China,” Trump said, signaling a hardline stance consistent with his previous trade policies during his presidency.
Canada and China maintain diplomatic and trade relations, though their ties have been strained in recent years over political and economic disputes. Ottawa has not officially announced any new trade agreement with Beijing, but Trump’s comments suggest growing pressure on U.S. allies to limit cooperation with China.
Trade experts warn that imposing 100% tariffs on Canada—one of the United States’ closest allies and largest trading partners—could trigger a major trade dispute, disrupt supply chains, and raise prices for consumers on both sides of the border. Canada is a key supplier of energy, automobiles, lumber, and agricultural products to the U.S. market.
The Canadian government has not yet responded directly to Trump’s remarks, but analysts expect Ottawa to emphasize its sovereignty in making trade decisions while seeking to avoid further tensions with Washington.
Trump’s statement reflects his broader campaign narrative of confronting China and reshaping global trade rules. As the U.S. political landscape heats up, trade policy is once again emerging as a central issue with potentially far-reaching consequences for international relations.
