From Old Trafford Talks to Anfield Glory: How Sadio Mané Chose Liverpool Over Manchester United

In a revealing reflection on one of the most pivotal decisions of his career, Sadio Mané has confirmed that he came very close to joining Manchester United before ultimately choosing Liverpool FC.
The Senegalese forward disclosed that contracts with United were prepared and an agreement had nearly been finalized. However, at the last moment, he reconsidered his options and opted for a different path — one that would go on to define his legacy in English football.
“I was very, very close to signing for Manchester United,” Mané explained. “The contracts were ready and we had agreed on everything. But in the end, I thought, ‘No, I want to go to Liverpool.’”
Central to that decision was the vision presented by then-Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. Mané recalled vividly the first phone call he received from the German tactician — a conversation that would prove decisive.
“He told me, ‘We have a big project at Liverpool, and I want you to be part of it,’” Mané said. The clarity of Klopp’s ambition and belief in him left a lasting impression.
During their discussion, Klopp asked Mané about his preferred position. At the time, Mané had demonstrated versatility during his spell at Southampton FC, featuring on both flanks.
“I told him I preferred playing on the left,” Mané revealed. Klopp responded by pointing out that Philippe Coutinho was already operating in that role. Without hesitation, Mané replied: “No problem, I will play on the right.”
That willingness to adapt would become one of his defining traits. Confident in his ability to perform across attacking positions, Mané quickly established himself as a key figure in Klopp’s evolving system.
