Ticket to Somaliland
Somalia’s unilateral move to impose an e-visa order on all travelers—including those traveling to and from Somaliland—is not just an administrative action, but yet another blatant violation of our sovereignty. This was predictable, and many had already warned that such steps would come sooner or later. Yet, unfortunately, our government once again reacted only after the fact, issuing defensive statements instead of preparing proactive strategies.
This is not diplomacy. This is sleeping diplomacy, and sleeping diplomacy is dangerous. A state that seeks recognition, respect, and stability cannot afford to operate by merely reacting to the agendas of others. Somaliland needs proactive, strategic diplomacy—diplomacy that anticipates challenges, that understands the hostile environment we live in, and that acts with foresight to defend the dignity and rights of our people.
Let it be absolutely clear to the international community and to every airline: Somaliland controls its own airspace, airports, and borders. Somalia’s e-visa decrees—or any other unilateral orders—carry no weight and have no legitimacy within the sovereign territory of Somaliland. Our institutions operate independently, and our people have repeatedly demonstrated their will for self-determination and self-governance.
This is not just about visas or travelers—it is about the bigger picture of sovereignty, dignity, and the international perception of Somaliland. Every time we respond weakly, we invite more aggression. Every time we wait to react, we show our adversaries that they can take the first move without consequence.
Wake up, Mr. President @Abdirahmanirro. The people of Somaliland cannot afford leaders who sleep through crises. We need leaders who anticipate challenges before they arise, who appoint the right people to handle international relations with skill and firmness, and who defend sovereignty with action, not just words. Defensive statements are a sign of weakness, and weakness in diplomacy leads to more violations.
Somaliland deserves better. Our people deserve clear policies, visionary leadership, and a government that operates on foresight rather than reaction. If we are serious about our cause, then our diplomacy must match the aspirations of our citizens—confident, strategic, and unyielding in the defense of sovereignty.
