Somali migrants in Libya

Another 165 Somali migrants stranded in Libya have safely returned home today with the support of the Federal Government of Somalia, the European Union (EU), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This latest return marks a new step in ongoing humanitarian efforts, bringing the total number of Somali migrants assisted to return from Libya this year to nearly 557 individuals.

The group included men, women, and young people who had been facing difficult conditions in Libya, where many migrants often become stranded due to conflict, economic challenges, or the risks associated with irregular migration routes. Upon their arrival in Mogadishu, the returnees received initial medical checks, counseling, and reintegration assistance to help them begin rebuilding their lives back home.

The migrants were assisted under IOM’s Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) programme, funded by the European Union. This programme aims to provide a safe and dignified alternative for migrants who wish to return to their countries of origin but lack the means to do so. VHR also ensures that returnees receive follow-up support, including psychosocial assistance, vocational training, and help reconnecting with their communities.

Somali officials expressed appreciation for the continued partnership with the EU and IOM, emphasizing that such efforts are crucial in protecting vulnerable migrants and offering them renewed hope. The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting citizens returning from abroad and strengthening measures to prevent unsafe migration journeys in the future.
