Anderson’s Regional Tour Reinforces U.S. Commitment Against ISIS and al-Shabaab

#AFRICOM Commander Gen. Anderson reaffirmed that his recent visit to Ethiopia, #Somaliland, and #Puntland was part of a broader U.S. strategy to strengthen regional partnerships and reinforce Washington’s long-standing commitment to combating #ISIS and #alShabaab across the Horn of Africa.
Gen. Anderson emphasized that the United States views the region as a critical front in the global fight against terrorism, noting that sustained cooperation with local governments remains essential for long-term security and stability.

During the multi-stop tour, the Commander held a series of high-level discussions with senior political leaders, military commanders, and security officials. The talks focused on expanding joint counterterrorism efforts, improving intelligence coordination, and supporting capacity-building programs designed to enhance the operational readiness of local forces. He underscored that AFRICOM is committed to working “shoulder to shoulder” with African partners to confront extremist threats and prevent terrorist networks from gaining ground.

The visit comes amid heightened security developments, particularly in Puntland, where local forces have been carrying out intensified operations against ISIS strongholds. These operations include targeted raids, surveillance missions, and coordinated strikes in remote mountainous areas where ISIS elements traditionally seek refuge. U.S. officials praised Puntland’s determination and highlighted the importance of sustained pressure to disrupt recruitment, financing, and logistical channels used by extremist groups.

In Somaliland and Ethiopia, Gen. Anderson also explored ways to reinforce border security, enhance maritime cooperation in the Gulf of Aden, and support regional initiatives aimed at countering violent extremism. Discussions highlighted the need for stronger cross-border collaboration, given that threats in the region are interconnected and often transcend national boundaries.

The Commander stressed that U.S. engagement goes beyond military support, encompassing efforts to promote governance, development, and stability, which are vital in addressing the root causes of radicalization. He reiterated that AFRICOM will continue to work closely with its African partners to advance shared security objectives and ensure that extremist organizations are denied safe haven anywhere in the region.
