FAO Supports Somalia’s Fisheries Capacity Through Advanced Stock Assessment Training
through an intensive 10-day practical fisheries stock assessment training designed to strengthen Somalia’s institutional and technical capacity in sustainable fisheries management. The training brought together national fisheries officers and technical staff, providing them with in-depth, hands-on experience in key scientific methods essential for understanding the status of marine resources.
Participants were trained in plankton sampling to analyze marine productivity, bottom trawling techniques to assess demersal fish stocks, and standardized biological data collection to support accurate stock assessments. These skills are critical for generating reliable scientific data, improving monitoring and evaluation systems, and informing evidence-based policies and management plans.
The initiative contributes to enhancing national ownership of fisheries research, reducing reliance on external expertise, and promoting sustainable exploitation of marine resources. By strengthening scientific capacity and data-driven management, the training supports food security, coastal livelihoods, and economic growth, while playing a crucial role in advancing #Somalia’s #BlueTransformation agenda and building a resilient and sustainable blue economy.
