FAO Leads MEL Alignment Session in Mogadishu to Strengthen 2026 Development Impact
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) convened a one-day orientation session in Mogadishu focused on Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL), bringing together a broad coalition of development actors to strengthen coordination and future planning.
The session was led by FAO’s MEL Specialist and gathered program coordinators and MEL representatives from several UN agencies and partner organizations, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), UN-Habitat, World Vision International (WVI), Shaqodoon, as well as officials from Somalia’s Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) and Ministry of Interior (MoI).
The primary objective of the meeting was to review progress toward 2025 targets while aligning priorities for MEL activities in 2026. Participants discussed performance tracking, data quality, learning mechanisms, and how evidence can better inform program design and decision-making across sectors.
By fostering collaboration between humanitarian, development, and government stakeholders, the session aimed to ensure that monitoring systems are not only measuring results but also generating practical lessons to improve interventions on the ground. Strengthened alignment in MEL approaches is expected to enhance accountability, avoid duplication of efforts, and maximize the impact of ongoing and future programs in Somalia.
FAO emphasized that effective monitoring and shared learning are essential for delivering sustainable results, particularly in complex contexts where resources must be used strategically and transparently. The Mogadishu session marks a step forward in building a more coordinated, evidence-driven development response for the year ahead.
