Massive Celebrations in Paris After Senegal’s AFCON Triumph Leave Police Injured
Paris witnessed scenes of jubilation and widespread celebrations last night following Senegal’s victory at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as thousands of fans poured into the streets to celebrate the historic achievement of the West African nation.
Supporters gathered in several areas of the French capital, waving Senegalese flags, chanting, dancing, and honking car horns late into the night. Popular districts and major squares became focal points of celebration, reflecting the strong Senegalese community in France and the deep emotional connection to the national team’s success.
However, the celebrations were not without incident. According to French authorities, 14 police officers were injured while attempting to manage crowds and maintain public order. The injuries reportedly occurred amid clashes, overcrowding, and attempts to control traffic and disperse large gatherings as festivities continued into the early hours of the morning.
Law enforcement officials stated that police had been deployed in large numbers in anticipation of the celebrations, but the sheer scale of the crowds posed significant challenges. While most supporters celebrated peacefully, isolated incidents led to tensions between some groups and security forces.
Despite the injuries, authorities confirmed that the situation was eventually brought under control, and investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incidents. No official figures regarding arrests or severe damage have been released so far.
Senegal’s AFCON victory has been hailed as a moment of national pride, not only in Dakar but across the Senegalese diaspora worldwide. In Paris, the celebrations highlighted both the passion of football fans and the challenges authorities face in balancing public safety with spontaneous mass festivities.
