UK Supports Healthcare for Somali Women and Girls Ahead of International Women’s Day
Mogadishu, Somalia – Ahead of International Women’s Day, Her Royal Highness The Duchess visited a hospital in Somalia where United Kingdom-funded programs are delivering essential sexual and reproductive healthcare services to women and girls.
The visit highlighted the UK’s ongoing commitment to improving maternal health and expanding access to critical medical services in Somalia, particularly in underserved communities. The hospital, supported through UK international development funding, provides a range of services including family planning, maternal care, and reproductive health education.
Healthcare workers at the facility emphasized the importance of these services in empowering women to make informed decisions about their health and future. Access to reproductive healthcare enables women to safely plan their families, reduce health risks associated with childbirth, and pursue educational and professional opportunities.
During the visit, The Duchess met with healthcare professionals and patients, gaining firsthand insight into the impact of UK-supported programs. She praised the dedication of frontline medical staff and reaffirmed the importance of investing in women’s health as a foundation for stronger and more resilient communities.
The initiative forms part of broader UK efforts to support Somalia’s healthcare system, which continues to face challenges due to limited resources and ongoing humanitarian pressures. International partnerships remain crucial in strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that vulnerable populations receive essential care.
As International Women’s Day approaches, the visit underscores the global focus on advancing women’s rights, improving access to healthcare, and enabling women and girls to achieve their full potential.
