Turkey Signals Potential Offshore Oil Discovery in Somalia

Turkey’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, has indicated that a potential offshore oil discovery may have been identified off the coast of Mogadishu.
According to Bayraktar, a site located approximately 372 kilometers offshore has shown early signs of oil presence. He noted that further technical assessments and exploratory work are still underway to determine the size, viability, and commercial potential of the find.
The announcement comes as Somalia continues efforts to develop its energy sector despite longstanding security and economic challenges. It also reflects deepening cooperation between Turkey and Somalia, particularly in energy and infrastructure development.
If confirmed, the discovery could mark a significant step forward for Somalia’s economy, potentially attracting foreign investment and strengthening the country’s energy prospects. However, experts caution that the process from initial discovery to full-scale production is complex and may take years of detailed exploration and evaluation.
