Roberto Martinez Steps Down as Portugal Head Coach After World Cup Exit

Roberto Martinez has officially stepped down as head coach of the Portugal national team, bringing an end to his tenure following the country's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Spanish manager confirmed his departure after Portugal suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16, stating that his journey with the national team had reached its conclusion. Martinez explained that his primary objective had been to guide Portugal to World Cup glory and believed it was the right time for a new chapter to begin.

The Portuguese Football Federation is now expected to begin the search for a new head coach as preparations for the team's future international competitions get underway.

Martinez leaves the role after more than three years in charge, having overseen Portugal through major tournaments and worked with a talented generation led by Cristiano Ronaldo.
