Trump Declares ‘Economic D-Day’ Against Iran, Threatening a Wider Economic Confrontation

U.S. President Donald Trump has declared what he called an “Economic D-Day” against Iran, announcing a sweeping campaign aimed at intensifying Tehran’s economic isolation and pressuring countries that continue to maintain financial or commercial ties with the Islamic Republic.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump described the planned measures as the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country”, accusing Iran of failing to reach a deal with Washington. He called for an unprecedented campaign of “economic warfare and isolation” against Tehran.

Trump also warned that countries, banks, companies and government entities that provide Iran with what he described as an economic “lifeline” could face severe consequences from the United States. The threats include efforts to target oil smuggling, financial transfers, shipping networks and other mechanisms used to maintain Iran’s international trade.

The announcement marks a further escalation of Washington’s economic pressure campaign against Tehran, particularly as negotiations between the two sides remain stalled. The United States has already imposed extensive sanctions on Iran’s oil, shipping and financial sectors.

Iran, meanwhile, has rejected Trump’s approach. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the new campaign would ultimately bring further defeat for the United States, arguing that continued economic pressure would deepen hostility rather than force Tehran into submission.

The consequences could extend beyond the two countries. Trump’s warning places pressure on Iran’s trading partners, particularly major buyers of Iranian oil, raising concerns about the impact on international trade and global energy markets. China has also urged Washington and Tehran to pursue diplomatic solutions rather than further escalation.

With Washington threatening unprecedented economic measures and Tehran refusing to back down, Trump’s declaration of an “Economic D-Day” signals a new and potentially far-reaching phase in the confrontation between the United States and Iran.
