Uganda Sets August 2027 Deadline for Full Withdrawal of Troops from Somalia


KAMPALA — Uganda has announced that it will withdraw all of its troops from Somalia by August 1, 2027, marking a potential end to nearly two decades of Ugandan military involvement in the country.

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, announced the withdrawal date on August 28, saying that no personnel from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) would remain in Somalia after the deadline.

Ugandan forces have played a major role in African Union-led security operations in Somalia since 2007, supporting the Somali government in its fight against Al-Shabaab and helping secure key areas.

The planned withdrawal comes as Somalia continues to face significant security challenges and works to strengthen its own national forces. Uganda’s departure could therefore place additional pressure on the Somali government and the African Union Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) to ensure that security responsibilities are effectively transferred to Somali forces.

The announcement also comes amid growing uncertainty over the future of international military support for Somalia. Uganda’s exit could become a major test of the country’s ability to maintain security as foreign forces gradually reduce their presence.

For Somalia, the key challenge will be ensuring that the withdrawal does not create a security vacuum that could be exploited by Al-Shabaab or other armed groups.
