Somalia and the United States

"Somaliland's envoy to the U.S. tells Newsweek there has been growing concern about the failure of the so-called ‘One Somalia’ policy. For years, this policy has been promoted as a framework for unity, yet in reality it has been built on denial, obstruction, and the refusal to acknowledge the political and historical facts on the ground.

Today, that approach is visibly collapsing. The gap between rhetoric and reality has become too wide to sustain. The international community is beginning to recognise that clinging to a failed vision only deepens instability, prolongs disputes, and prevents the people of Somaliland from receiving the recognition they deserve.

A new approach is needed — one that moves beyond empty slogans and instead reflects the aspirations of the people, their decades of self-governance, and their proven commitment to peace and democracy. The world is ready for a policy that recognises Somaliland not as a theoretical part of a state that no longer functions, but as a partner for stability, security, and development in the Horn of Africa."
