Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has delivered a strong statement following recent developments surrounding African football competitions.

Thiaw reflected on past encounters, noting that despite Senegal’s defeat to Algeria in 2019, his team left with pride after facing what he described as a fair and honorable opponent. He also highlighted Senegal’s repeated clashes with Egypt, emphasizing that both victories and defeats are part of the game, which, in his words, is decided on the pitch—not in administrative offices.
The Senegalese coach praised both Egypt and Algeria as the strongest Arab teams he has faced in his career, stressing that competition against them has always remained within the spirit of the game.
In a surprising move, Thiaw announced Senegal’s decision to withdraw from the Africa Cup of Nations, calling on other national teams to consider boycotting what he described as a “farce.” He further added that the trophy “will not leave Dakar,” even if it means taking drastic measures, including potentially refusing to participate in the next FIFA World Cup.
