Xavi: My Story with Barcelona Is Over
Former Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández has opened up about the circumstances surrounding his departure from the club, expressing deep disappointment with club president Joan Laporta and revealing new details about internal decisions that affected both his future and the potential return of Lionel Messi.
Xavi claimed that plans for Messi’s return to FC Barcelona were close to becoming reality after Argentina’s triumph in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, according to the former coach, Laporta halted the move because he feared Messi could become a political rival within the club.
The former Barcelona legend also spoke about the uncertainty that surrounded his position during the season. Xavi revealed that he had informed the club’s leadership of his desire to leave midway through the campaign. Despite his request, the club reportedly asked him to stay and continue the project.
“I wasn’t fully convinced,” Xavi admitted, “but I agreed to remain.”
The situation changed dramatically after Barcelona were eliminated from the Paris Saint‑Germain in the Champions League. According to Xavi, he was then told that members of the club’s board were divided over whether he should remain in charge.
The former midfielder did not hide his frustration with Laporta, stating that the club president had ultimately let him down. Xavi suggested that the decision to remove him was made without full transparency and that he was not given the complete truth about the club’s intentions.
“Laporta disappointed me,” he said. “He got rid of me without telling me the real story.”
Xavi concluded his remarks with a strong statement about his future relationship with the club where he spent most of his playing career and later coached.
“My story with Barcelona is finished,” he said. “Both as a player and as a coach. I will never return.”
The comments mark a dramatic chapter in the relationship between one of Barcelona’s greatest legends and the club he helped shape for more than two decades.
