At a press conference ahead of Manchester City’s clash with Crystal Palace F.C., Pep Guardiola strongly
defended Lamine Yamal after the young FC Barcelona star drew attention during the club’s La Liga title celebrations.
When asked whether footballers should avoid interfering in matters unrelated to football, Guardiola fired back at the journalist, questioning why the discussion was being shifted away from the upcoming match.
“And should you also avoid interfering in things that are not your specialty?” Guardiola replied. “You are here to ask me about tomorrow’s match against Crystal Palace.”
Despite his frustration, Guardiola continued by defending Yamal’s right to speak out on important issues, emphasizing the influence modern footballers have on millions of people around the world.
“A football player is a role model followed by millions, and his opinion is influential, so he should express his opinion when necessary,” Guardiola said.
The Manchester City manager then delivered an emotional response, referencing the suffering of civilians caught in war and destruction.
“What would you do if you found your wife and children under the rubble of homes?” he asked. “Would you come here to the press conference to talk about a player wearing a shirt and running after a ball? Of course not.”
Guardiola concluded by praising Yamal’s stance, insisting the Barcelona youngster should feel proud for using his platform to speak out.
“Lamine’s stance is something he should be proud of,” Guardiola added. “He has now become the talk of the world.”
