Somali Referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan Denied Entry to the US: Why Was He Blocked?

Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was unexpectedly denied entry into the United States, just days before he was set to make history as the first Somali referee to participate in officiating matches at the FIFA World Cup.

The reason behind Artan’s refusal of entry remains unclear. However, Somalia’s inclusion on a travel restriction list previously introduced by the administration of US President Donald Trump has been suggested as one possible factor.

Speaking to The New York Times, Artan said that his questioning by immigration officials lasted for 11 hours. He was then held in a solitary cell for several additional hours before being deported to Istanbul without being given a clear explanation for the decision.

The incident has raised questions about the impact of travel restrictions on international sports figures and the challenges faced by athletes and officials representing countries affected by such policies.
