Trump Floats Renaming Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’ Amid Escalating Canada Trade Dispute


WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked fresh controversy with a proposal to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” as tensions between the United States and Canada continue to escalate over trade.

Trump said on August 25 that the United States was giving “serious consideration” to changing the lake’s name, linking the proposal to deteriorating economic relations with Ontario. He later shared an altered map showing the lake under the proposed name.

Lake Ontario is a shared body of water between the U.S. state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario. Any unilateral U.S. renaming would therefore have limited practical effect on how the lake is officially recognized in Canada. Canadian officials have dismissed the proposal, saying they will continue to refer to it as Lake Ontario.

The proposal comes amid a broader deterioration in U.S.-Canada relations following the collapse of trade negotiations and the introduction of new tariffs. Canada has announced retaliatory measures, further intensifying the dispute between the two longtime trading partners.

Trump’s latest naming proposal also echoes his earlier campaign to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” reflecting his administration’s broader use of geographic names as part of its political messaging.

For now, Lake Ontario remains its internationally established name, and Trump’s proposal appears to be primarily a political and symbolic gesture rather than an immediate change to the lake’s official name.
