Somali Forces Kill 14 Al-Shabaab Fighters in Southwest Somalia


BAIDOA, Somalia — Somali security forces have intensified their military campaign against Al-Shabaab, with the elite Danab Special Forces reporting the killing of 14 militants during an overnight operation in the southwestern region of the country.

The operation took place in the Buula Fulaay area of Bay region, where Danab forces targeted what the Somali Ministry of Defense described as a hideout used by Al-Shabaab fighters. Authorities said the operation also resulted in the destruction of the militant group’s position.

The Ministry of Defense said the operation was part of ongoing military efforts aimed at disrupting Al-Shabaab networks, weakening its operational capabilities and improving security in areas where the group remains active.

Somali military authorities praised the troops involved and said operations against Al-Shabaab would continue until lasting peace and security are achieved.

The operation came shortly after renewed fighting in Baidoa, the capital of South West State. On September 3, clashes erupted between federal government forces and militias aligned with former South West President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen. Somalia’s Defense Ministry also accused Al-Shabaab of taking part in the fighting, although the claim could not be independently verified.

The latest military operation highlights the continuing security challenges facing Somalia. Although government forces and international partners have conducted repeated operations against Al-Shabaab, the group remains capable of operating in parts of southern and central Somalia and carrying out attacks.

The reported death toll from the Buula Fulaay operation was provided by Somali military authorities and has not been independently verified. Al-Shabaab has not publicly commented on the reported losses.

The Somali government is increasingly relying on specialized units such as Danab as it seeks to strengthen national forces and reduce the threat posed by Al-Shabaab. However, the persistence of the insurgency, combined with political tensions and instability in parts of the country, continues to complicate Somalia’s efforts to achieve lasting security.
